YouTube and Dailymotion sign music rights agreements
The MCPS-PRS Alliance (UK) and YouTube announced on 30 August 2008 a ground-breaking agreement to license more than 10 million pieces of music to YouTube, that will recognise the contribution of the creators of that music to the service.
Steve Porter, Chief Executive of the MCPS-PRS Alliance said: ‘We are delighted to have concluded this deal with YouTube and to be the first collecting society outside the US to do so. Whether it is music videos, user uploads or other audio visual content, our agreement will allow our 50,000 songwriter, composer and music publisher members to be paid when their creative talents are being enjoyed on YouTube's service across the UK.' Video-sharing website Dailymotion has also signed an agreement with French
music rights association Sacem to pay rights and royalties for music
used in official, creative and user-generated content.
The contract is
retroactive from 1 January 2006, when Dailymotion began, until the end
of 2010. Sacem chairman Bernard Miyet said this was the first rights
deal signed with a sharing site.
French culture minister Christine
Albanel applauded the two parties cooperation. Separately, Dailymotion
announced that its number of users rose by 11.6 percent to 38.36
million worldwide unique visitors in October, compared to September.
Based on data from ComScore, unique visitors in France rose by 13
percent in one month to 10 million.
The length of time of visits was
10.8 minutes per session, or nearly 40 percent more than on other
independent video portals.
This could be a good little additional earner for the most viewed video-uploaders who own the music ...
